How I ruined my weekend:

in Milliways
For those that don't know I have a 386/40 system that I've put WAY too much money into to make it a "perfect" dos gaming system. Recently I've been toying with adding a 9gb 10k rpm scsi hard drive. After every conceivable hurdle was cleared I finally got all the hardware to co-operate. The hard disk …

Re: SCSI or IDE for 386

yea it looks like the adapter is the bottleneck. Is there a bios update for it? ugg. looks like I have another reason to get a bios flasher... BAH. http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/1502/p31542.jpg I was looking at other cards, and this came up: AHA-1522B http://www.ebay.com/itm/350162768611 …

Re: SCSI or IDE for 386

Well I don't have a stand-alone scsi card apart from the one i'm putting into my 386 so I decided to test the drives on my dual slot-1 that I saved from oblivion a little while back. First off, is the scsi drive. I did change the cable from a 50 pin to a 68. I *might* do a test with a 50 pin cable …

Re: SCSI or IDE for 386

Apparently, in my case at least, the difference between scsi and ide isn't that great. The first picture is using a plain WD 6gb hard drive on a nice ide controller. The second is using an adaptec aha-1542b controller with a 9gb 10,000 rpm scsi hard drive. (U160) http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/ …

Re: 486 DVD burner

...I'm glad to see I didn't read any replies to the liking of "no way, impossible, you're crazy, a 486-that's nuts" I didn't say it. but I am sure thinking it loudly. Mostly I'm trying to figure out WHY? What on earth is so large that it doesn't fit on a cd, and why are you using a 486 for it? On a …

Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

...Anyway the PSU crapped out after a couple of hours and it's sitting in the shed now, hopefully ashamed of itself. I have to admit, that made me chuckle out loud. I love that Ipex case with the asus motherboard. That is just BEGGING to have a Cyrix 133 slapped in it to make a 486 beast. The …

Re: what is your computer "plan"

in Milliways
I too once went through a regretable "throw it all away" phase. Luckily I kept the best 20% of the gear. I now have the mindset that if it doesn't work, save it, it will work later. TRUE STORY!!! I had a dual slot one board that I kept around for a good year before it suddenly started working. Next …
