Re: How can I measure FPS in Windows 98 on a virtual machine?

in Windows
I guess there are two different types of FPS you could measure. You could run a game that shows its FPS, but that just indicates how frequently it's able to update the virtual screen, which I assume is not what you're after. I assume what you want is actually a measure of how often the hypervisor - …

Re: best version of Office to learn

in Milliways
I think it's okay to use old versions of Office at home, but in a workplace with people who aren't tech gurus but rather are the type of people who are likely to open an attachment in an email without checking who it's from, you're asking for trouble if you run versions of Office that no longer get …

Re: keep pressed keyboard keys

in Milliways
I searched for a while to try to determine whether there was a distinction between a continuous keypress and successive, very short interval keypresses in the context of Windows and I could not find any information that even mentioned a continuous keypress. At this point, I am not sure that there …

Re: keep pressed keyboard keys

That script looks like it hits the "a" key as many times as it can for 10 seconds, rather than toggling it on and off based on the user hitting a key. I think it would take some work to make it read a key and then repeat that key until the key is hit again, which I assume is what the OP wanted? Also …

Re: When did Unreal Tournament multiplayer get so "difficult"?

in Milliways
Some of the people you're playing against may have been playing UT99 for a quarter of a century! :D They say that if you practice anything for X amount of time you can become an expert, and I can't remember what X is but it was only a few years, not 25. There are probably almost no new players …

Re: Dual boot with Win 95 Dos and Win 3.11

in Windows
Hi.. I couldnt find a Win 95 upgrade with osr 2 or above.. only osr1.. I think by "with OSR1" you mean "with SP1"? I think they're equivalent though, and yeah, you can't go beyond SP1 with the retail (non-OEM) Windows 95 using the normal install methods of anything released by Microsoft, from what …

Re: Dual boot with Win 95 Dos and Win 3.11

in Windows
If you install Windows 3.1, then Windows 95 Upgrade (the retail product, not OEM like OSR1 or OSR2) you don't need to run any third-party utilities to get dual boot to work. I guess you don't get FAT32 that way, but you probably don't need it for your 800MB HDD. I'm not sure if you can get USB …

Re: Adventures with Windows 3.0

Higher color depths means Program Manager .GRP files will get larger because they store the icons, and there's a limit on the size (probably 64KiB but I forget), so basically higher color depths means less icons per group. At least this affects 3.1x so I assume it affects 3.0 too! .FON font files …

Re: Developing for Windows 98 and up?

My recollection is that Windows 8.1 broke the ability to run Visual C++ 6, which would be annoying if you wanted to do some build/debug cycles on a newer OS. Perhaps that got fixed or someone found a workaround. I've heard good things about Borland C++ Builder. I haven't used it much myself but it …
