Re: Red Alert resolution

The dos and windows version use different resolutions. I believe it to be 320x200 for dos and 640x480 for Windows. Ostensibly some people claim that they can change the resolution in the REDALERT.INI and get the resolution to change for the dos version. I tried doing it with my version of Red Alert …

Re: Warcraft II on Dosbox in Ubuntu

I tried running it myself and didn't have any problems getting it to see the cd. (Version 1.0 Retail) There are some additional command-line switches for mounting the cd listed in the README. Sometimes they are useful in getting games to recognize the cd. Also it might not hurt to check the war2.ini …

Re: Running .exe commands from a Lynux shell

in Windows
You might want to consider carefully whether you want to run dos apps, or windows apps on Linux. There is a bit of difference. If you just want dos apps, dosemu(not xdosemu!) will run from a console without X. http://dosemu.sourceforge.net/ It's been a long time since I've used it, so I can't say …

Re: Old games + macs = playable?

There is a version of Wine available for Macs. Called Darwine. I personally have never used it so I can't say anything about how easy it is to use, what it requires, how stable it is, what games it runs, etc... The official (and rather old version-as in still offering builds for the PowerPC) is at …

Re: Windows install

in Windows
If you're simply wanting to run Windows apps on Linux, have you thought about trying Wine instead? http://www.winehq.com It doesn't run everything, but it runs enough to make it worth a try. For those apps that don't, I've found looking through the App database useful in seeing if certain versions …

Re: KQ7 + Vista

The version of KQ7 in that collection is the Windows version only. But there is a patch available that will make that Windows version into a dos version. Which I seem to remember as made by collector, and is likely what he is referring to. (By the way, my heartfelt thanks.)

Re: Lands of Lore 2 - Guardians of Destiny

I seem to recall having a problem with the game roughly around that spot when I played it using real DOS years ago. Don't know if there was ever a solution, but I got by it playing the game using a Windows emulator to run the Windows version to get past that specific point, saving it, and then went …

Re: Gabriel Knight 2 - extreme tearing :(

Without seeing a screenshot, I can't say much. But GK2 did display the videos in a way that might seem wrong. Attached is a screenshot from my computer. The way I've always remembered the game looking. (Sorry about the size, but I was a bit worried about the lines not being visible if it were …

Re: GK2 save problems

If by "scanlines", you mean interlaced, then that is the way that GK2 played the movies. Never heard why, but I've presumed it was a limitation of the technologies used then, or in a effort to reduce the size of the MANY videos in the game. I'm not bothered by them, but apparently there is a patch …

Re: linux in dosbox

Using bochs to run Linux http://www.hacker.co.il/psp/bochs/ (a bit limited due to the lack of a keyboard for the PSP) Running a custom version of linux http://jacksonm80.googlepages.com/linuxonpsp.htm (no idea how idea how robust it is)

Re: Problems installing/upgrading DOSbox

(probably off-topic) Are there any process that seems to be taking up too much of CPU/memory at those times of slowing, by using the 'top' command from a console? Sometimes one process or another will start sucking up resources for one reason or another. For example when I change my screen …

Re: Keyboard problem

That's some funky math. Processor frequency does not equal processor speed, not even roughly. There's so many more things to consider to "rate" a performance level - architecture (why is a 1,6 Ghz Dual Core usually faster than a 3 Ghz P4?), optimization (mobile processors are optimized for low …

Re: Keyboard problem

I looked up the Nokia N800 and found out the CPU is roughly 330 MHz. To date my rule-of-thumb has been to apply a 10 times factor for CPU to dosbox performance. Very rough approximation from my circumstances, of course. Assuming that it applies to the Nokia, I would presume that it should be able to …

Re: Dosbox and fglrx

I suspect that the fglrx driver might be having trouble with mode changes such as the resolution changing. Unfortunately if so, short of changing the drivers to a newer/older fglrx or a completely different one, I suspect the only solution would be to not change the resolution. If you can live …

Re: Dosbox and fglrx

I had the same problem. Only solution I found was to get a different version of the drivers. (Personally if you've got a real old card, at least 9200 or lower, I'd suggest using the DRI drivers instead of the proprietary ATI driver. There are some open-source drivers for newer cards just beginning …

Re: Airborne Ranger

If that directory contains the files from the floppy, you could try mounting it with the "-t floppy" option. That should make dosbox think that it's a floppy. You might have to install it, so it might not hurt to have another directory set as the c drive. On the other hand it might be some form of …

Re: Space Quest 4/OSX

Some games (especially Sierra ones) need to have the cd mounted with the "-t cdrom" enabled when the cd is mounted. Otherwise the game presumes it is already installed on the hard drive and the install.exe starts running as a way of configuring the game instead of installing it. Given that the game …

Re: Can't mount CDRom in Linux

Actually ~=home under linux, or in your specific case /home/Glen. About the screen turning black and crashing the computer that sounds strange. The only time when dosbox would crash my computer was when I had some bad drivers that couldn't run dosbox in fullscreen. Otherwise when dosbox crashed, my …
