Wolfenstein 3D is mostly adlib sounds. Like the amusing "phwoooooong-bliddely" which plays when collecting treasure. Adding a soundblaster brings a couple of extra sounds like a loud grating noise when the doors open.

I think there is nothing that will make the SVGA modes in some DOS games run smoothly. Maybe they put those modes in hoping that software mode graphics would become faster in the future, but it didn't happen. Instead everyone moved on to 3DFX and then D3D.

Another thing you can do to speed Doom up is reduce the screen size further in the options menu. I think I used to play with one level of border around the screen on a 386SX33.

The slower they spin the quieter they are. My experience so far: 2x - silent 4x - just about silent 8x - a slight hum? 12x - ? 16x - ? 24x - ? 32x - intolerably noisy (for peaceful gaming) Can anyone fill in my blanks or perform a more accurate acoustic measurement?? :-) On the quieter spinning …

Soldering 2 wires together and most of the solder just evaporates, drops on the ground...it's just horrible I think the trick is to preheat the wires with the soldering iron for a brief moment before applying any solder.

I use a Logitech MX518 which works fine in DOS through a PS/2 adapter.

Annoyingly the later versions of the game don't have any music. If you have the first edition then the music is CD audio tracks.
