Well DosBox features don't change that much from official CVS. So if you constantly update CVS then you don't really need to since it's mostly bug fixes and not features.....but if you don't update DosBox that often then yeah it's a good idea.

Dunno, could be normal behavior. Don't have the game so can't check for myself. Try loading the game in NTVDM in XP and/or normal MS-DOS and see if it performs the same behavior.
