The CF card itself should not be a problem. I can achieve around 45 MB/s with it, and the theoretical specs go even a bit further. I assume you have the same “industrial” card from Transcend as they only have one kind of the size of 16 GB.

As far as I understand it, the classic GUS does not use a ROM and you are required to supply the needed .PAT files in the ULTRASND\MIDI directory yourself.

Ah, okay. Yeah, the 2.14a version works fine for me. I might just keep this version as it is working for this particular drive. With the XDVD2.SYS driver I get atrocious read speeds for some reason unknown to me.

I too have noticed the problem with VIDECDD.SYS. I don't know what causes it. Maybe VIDECDD.SYS traps ports for some reason but I did test loading it before and after EMM386.EXE and there was no difference. If it traps ports, then it must do so during/after loading MSCDEX. But more likely it is …

You can disable the MPU and the IDE controller, and put the record and playback DMA on the same channel (putting it into half-duplex mode). But two GUS ACEs would be easier to pull off

When I was a teenager, I could never afford a whopping 16 MB of RAM for my “budget” 486. It came with 4 (!!!) and I managed to up it to 8 MB with my weekend job. It was a 486/66 btw and Windows 95 indeed was a pain.

Maybe because instruments are often not used on their own, and syncing up multiple digital sound outputs is not possible with plain spdif. Their are other solutions for that.
