Yeah, I've noticed a lot of the discs up there are the updates and/or restore cd's for G4's, ibooks and the like.

Anyone know where to get a copy of MacOS 9.2? I've got an iMac G3-500 and a beige G3 tower, both of which I'd like to resurrect - they were rescued from work and had OS X installed (I have a top spec eMac for OS X so I'd rather put 9.2.2 back on) and I only have OS X media and the free 9.2.x updates …

The Cirrus will probably work with pretty much any Dos game - CL542x chips were incredibly common back then as low-middle range designs. It will likely be as fast as you ever need in Dos. However, the Mach32 will be a better windows accelerator, if you intend to run Windows in addition to Dos.

Thanks for that. When I tried running that version i get an error "libSDL_sound-1.0.so.1: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64" and quits. Running the normal dosbox is fine obviously thoug hwithout glide support It means that the libSDL_sound-1.0.so.1 library is for a 64bit kernel - I'm guessing yours is …

There are also a very few PCMCIA video cards, but again that would be bypassing the internal LCD. It would be interesting to see if a non-output card like the PowerVR would work!

I have the Thinkpad 385ED, I think it's virtually the same spec as the 380. The CS4236B works as a Soundblaster 2 and/or Soundblaster Pro without any drivers in Dos (in windows you can use the proper Crystal drivers) - you can use the Thinkpad tools to set the resource configuration9 (eg 220/7/1) …

With a laptop you probably want a PCMCIA midi interface, the (hard to find) Roland SCP-55 would suit, but I believe Yamaha also did a PCMCIA soundcard with MIDI interface.

The PNP is also based on different hardware to the original GUS and GUS MAX - rather than the Gravis GF1 chip it uses the AMD Interwave. This may or may not mean worse compatibility than the original designs.

What are you planning on hanging off the SCSI bus? Your main disk? Are you planning on using ethernet for bulk file transfer or just copying the odd game to/from the box? In DOS it's easy: connect the daughterboard, make sure the soundblaster (or equivalent) is jumpered for MIDI on port 330 and set your music device to be General MIDI, Waveblaster or Yamaha XG. No drivers or other software required.

I upgraded my Asus board (in sig) from 256 to 512 and found very little difference - only cacheable range changed (ie windows/linux would be a bit better). Benchmarks didn't show up more than a few %, as feipoa says.

For Dos-only use you're probably not going to get any benefit over something like a S3 Virge / Trio64. Pretty much solid compatibility and VESA support too.
