Re: Most Bestest PCI DOS \ Early Windows Video Card?

in Marvin \ Video
Interesting. I just recently tested a bunch of PCI cards, and out of all my S3 cards, the Diamond Virge DX was the only one that had VBE2.0 built-in. It's my only Diamond-branded S3, so I don't know if that was something they did to all their S3 cards or not. But I find it interesting that my …

I love this page http://gona.mactar.hu/DOS_TESTS/ but it would be really cool if BIOS versions were added Thanks. Yes BIOS versions are important in some cases. First I have seen with Matrox Millennium that BIOS versions can count. V2.5 (838-15) and older bioses are faster in DOS than V2.7 (838-17) …

Are you sure it's only because of 16 bit vs 32 bit and not some other architectural difference? I'm not saying that it isn't but many other DOS games runs just as fast and some even faster on the P6 architecture. My knowlede on this topic is admittedly not great enough to answer exactly why. My …

I just checked phils results. Duke Nukem 3D is a game that really really favors the Pentium MMX over the Pentium II and Pentium Pro. This is however not generally the case in your avarage DOS or early Win 9x game. From Phils review of the PII 266. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4t0MbYaGVg (Phils …

I have made benchmarks with Duke Nukem 3D (1280x1024) and Quake 1.08 (800x600) and not prove this. Quake is much faster on a Pentium or Pentium MMX compared to the Pentium Pro and the Pentium II clock for clock. The thing is that Quake is heavily optimized for the Pentium and an extreme case. I …

I also have a 180 MHz Pentium Pro machine set up as a fast DOS box. Pentium Pro is not good at 16bit OS/applications like DOS applications. Pentium Pro is best in clean 32bit OS/apps like NT. For DOS games better a Pentium 1 MMX 233 or even better a 500MHz K6-2+. I think for a fast dos box the K6- …

You can use this chart for DOS games video card compatibility: http://gona.mactar.hu/DOS_TESTS/ - S3, Cirrus Logic, Trident (PCI) and nVidia cards are best suited for DOS games. Early ATi Mach64 PCI cards (witch is missing from the chart) are also great for DOS games. Thanks. I have not expected …
