I got two pcx1 cards all the way from china. I/O data board works fine, but apocalypse 3d seems broken. It installs but launching anything 3d freezes the pc. The chip barely heathens up compared to the working board. No sign of damage, is it dead?

i740 really uses on board texture memory, frame buffer is limited to 4MB and whatever more the boards have is for textures. As you can see they even use different memory type for each. Just found out there was even 24MB version which had 8 MB framebuffer, they were not adding memory just for kicks. …

Why would you benchmark glide anyway, you need open APIs to compare performance. Worst is that even in d3d voodoo hates fraps. Use help for motoracer, it has demos. MDK is one of the most compatible, but very specific engine and no in-game animations makes benchmarking less attractive. Motoracer goes so easy on 3d cards, have all the switches you need for 1st gen. Features of Turok rarely work on 1st gen, preventing equal conditions.

You know which old and popular api went easy on CPUs, I would try some 3dfx with complete triangle setup like Banshee or even later Voodoos. If not then Vérité should do. Oh, and the 3DO Blaster will have smooth framerates for sure 😁
