Virge was not limited to 16 bit. Consider Trio3Ds, they had 128 bit 2D as well. Bus should not make a difference. Xtreme is not so rare.

Better access time not only requires capable memory, but also bios that would set the timings. So you might need to modify bios as well, I don't think there are tools to do it conveniently. Even then better timings of video memory usually do not improve performance above margin of error. More …

Shaders have minimal demands for bus traffic. Should be no surprise that ~20% of Geforce GTX 480 can beat ~20% of GeForce 8800 GTX.

I always thought "Quake3 supports HW T&L" to be a myth, IMO. It does use complied vertex arrays if you use r_primitives 2 however. Perhaps that's where the whole T&L placebo comes from, and I never had any miraculous performance jump with that... I thought the transformations go to hardware …

Seeing how the Quake3 low quality tests are CPU bound, can it be said TnL relieves the CPU by ~20%? I was always wondering how big difference it can make.
