Re: Reversing the Disney Sound Source

Thanks :) Going with a MCU might actually be a better approach, considering the 74ALS232 bills in at $5-$9 each these days making the clone as it is not very cost effective. Seeing how i.e. the ATMega8 costs ~$2 and supports 2x8bit I/O along with various control pins it might probably be a better …

Re: Reversing the Disney Sound Source

Good news everyone! After changing the LPT ports adress to a more standard one (0x378 instead of 0x3bc) and changing the mode from "bi-directional" to EPP - I can now confirm the sound in Wolf3d as working :) Guten Tag! NiteRaid & Duke3D (which actually does quite a lot [mixing various channels, …

Re: Reversing the Disney Sound Source

Got the missing parts today, wired up a hastly prototype on breadboard, adjusted the variable resistor by some guesswork (was too lazy/excited to measure) and on the second try ... SUCCESS http://i.imgur.com/rsttAeY.jpg Now off to wire the actual data lines and the connector to the Covox. (yes, …

Re: Reversing the Disney Sound Source

Still waiting for the parts to arrive (pre-ordering for pickup seemed to have been a stupid choice) But I got bored today, enjoy an awesome 90s rendering of the emulator and a covox plug rotating ... in Dolby GIF (where available - warning 2MB file) http://i.imgur.com/8tfrQQ0.gif

Re: Reversing the Disney Sound Source

Can you also post schematics (with componen values too) if you want to have a review? That would be very welcome :) http://i.imgur.com/Ss9CHJd.png I just want to see how the FULL signal handling is now. If one of them is full, the other one should also be full, or they are one or more samples out …

Re: Reversing the Disney Sound Source

Breaking news! Another PCB update (aka still waiting for the ICs to arrive). http://i.imgur.com/VmO6cAR.png Adapted the single input NOT-gate to a dual input NAND-gate for the FULL signal. Cut down most jumper wires to sane lenghts. Added pre-resistor for finetuning the output rate, while …

Re: Reversing the Disney Sound Source

Ok, just double-checked my reversed scheme based upon photos I took - no base resistor there either. Not being familiar with that concept, maybe you should push me into a direction Jepael ... my googled knowledge has led me to anything between 1k and 1M being a suitable value.

Re: Reversing the Disney Sound Source

Thanks. Should work. If there exists a "HC" version, it will have more symmetrical output drive for the R2R dac, but I would not worry (the original LPT port had "LS" types as well). To my knowledge the ALS variant is the only one in existance (I tried checking for pretty much anything (HCT/HC/F) …

Re: Reversing the Disney Sound Source

What's the type of the 4-bit FIFO chips? 74ALS232 (16x 4Bit) The two FULL output pins should not be tied together, only one push-pull output should drive the transistor. Alright, thought so :) And, there is no series resistor between FULL output pin and transistor base, it needs one or it might …
