Are you sure it's an EDO DIMM? The Intel chipset had suppport for SDRAM as well as EDO. See if a stick of SDRAM fits in one of those slots; EDO DIMMs and SDRAM DIMMs use slightly different slots.

Not likely. If Epson offered a TFT variant of that notebook, you might be in luck. However, even then, TFTs typically use some different circuitry. I'd say your best bet if you want to use that laptop is to load up on simple Windows and DOS games (Like MS Entertainment Pack, SimTower, SimCity, etc) …

Maybe that card's just seen too rough a time at some point in it's life. Inspect scratches in the PCD to make sure they're not deep enough to sever any traces. After that, check the chip again with a magnifier just to be sure none of those pins touch.
