Re: Why do PC first person shooters use checkpoints?

in Milliways
...A free save system gives everyone a choice. Some folks don't want to become FPS experts, they just want to play the game for fun, to enjoy the story, or the visuals, or whatever... This. No one is forcing the purist to save a lot - and if they want to impose personal discipline let them have at …

Re: Favourite version of Windows?

At the time I was ready to drop 95 in the wastepaper basket when 98 came out. But I still have a fondness for 95 - especially now that I've had time to carefully install and set it up. I like 95c quite a lot now and install it in preference to 98 on most of my 95-1999 retro builds. I stuck with 98se …

Re: Acronis Alternatives?

I might try Macrium again. My first pass was unpleasant, but neither is AHI so it's worth another look. At this point I'm not adverse to paying - so long as it's clear, simple and works. I've used Easeus utilities before and they worked pretty well - maybe they have a trial version. Thanks all...

Re: Why do PC first person shooters use checkpoints?

I agree with the OP that *most* gamers prefer being able to save when they want/need to. That said if a checkpoint design has enough save points it's less of an issue, but even then I find the in-game save hicups a distraction - so the more of them the more of a distraction. The classic "load up new …

Acronis Alternatives?

in Milliways
I upgraded to W10 a few months ago. I'm very pleased with the new system with one caveat - I had to move on from the W7 iterations of Acronis Home Image to the most recent AHI-2019. I'm not at all happy with it's super confusing/opaque functionality. Anyone out there use a comparable suite that lets …

Re: MiG Alley

+1 It would be awesome to get this underapprciated gem flying again properly in W10 with dgV2! After migrating to W10 recently I finally got it running under a W95 daum dosbox build but you're limited to orignal res and filtering and no widescreen, and also under DXwnd with some options fiddling - …

Re: W10 alternative to MagicDisc?

in Milliways
W10 plays very much nicer with older games of the early DX era than W7 did - as much as I loved W7. Coupled with the various D3D/DX wrappers floating around I'm getting really good looking results on games that have been shaky runners for quite some time - probably looking better than they ever did. …

Re: W10 alternative to MagicDisc?

....For ISO creation I just use Imageburn which is free and lightweight. Work fine in Windows 10, so far. I just gave ImgBurn a whirl - nice... works fine but not quite as fast and nifty as MagicDisc's routine. Thanks for the heads up... Guess I'm set now, well except for a Plex Media Server …

Re: W10 alternative to MagicDisc?

....Yeah, I still continue to use MagicDisc and didn't find anything better as its replacement. Yes, MagicDisc is a really handly tool in that it works with and creates lots of image types. While iso is the norm, bin/cue is essential, and uif and others have their place in the menagerie. I like the …

W10 alternative to MagicDisc?

in Milliways
I just migrated to W10 a few days ago and very pleased with the system''s ability to run older games with less issue than W7. One of the few hicups has been the loss of MagicDisc which doesn't seem to run under W10. MD was an awesome little utility; easily setup virtual drives and make images all in …
