Re: Dumpster treasures !

in Milliways
Now that I think about it that case looks suspiciously like some cyrix computers I saw in Best Buy once. Yes that's right - I remember when the cyrix name was going on computers and you could buy then in stores

Re: k6-2 versus celeron

in Milliways
I'm thinking of phasing out my K6-2 systems - I have three. With voodoo cards it makes a good box for half-life and unreal (but not much else). With a P3 you can do the same thing but also have a system that's powerful enough for other things (shrug)

Re: k6-2 versus celeron

Thanks for the input - my experience has been that running Quake in software rendering in any higher resolutions (even 640x 480) requires a pretty hefty processor

k6-2 versus celeron

in Milliways
Hey All, That last board I got same with a celeron 533 (not something I would get myself, and I plan to replace it). However, I was testing the board with Quake in software rendering, and it was giving me performance way, way ahead of what I could get with my k6-2 500. Now I always thought celeron …

Re: ebay haul

in Milliways
Well I got my board - it seems to be in working order :happyhappy: Taking the orb cooler on and off turned out not to be a big deal at all. However, it is LOUD. I am going to be getting another one of those Nexus coolers. That celeron 533 it came with is giving far better performance than I expected …

Re: ebay haul

in Milliways
Even if the board has some problem the RAM alone is worth $13. I am not sure about that golden orb cooler. I'm going to look at that REAL careful - I have never had one but I hear they are a real pain to install

Re: Hurrah! - Found an AT case!

I have seen lots of very similar cases around - different heights or fronts, but all with that same black control panel and all looking like they were made by the same manufacturuer. Does anyone know who made that case?

ebay haul

I got a new board off ebay. Asus CUBX (my second) with a celeron 566 (that will be upgraded), one of those golden orb coolers (never had one) and 128 MB of RAM for......................$13 😁

Re: AMD Quits Benchmark Group Implying Intel Bias

in Milliways
Gah, I made a long post yesterday but it got lost :( I think the quitters have secretly teamed up to delegitimize bapco as an attempt to stop Intel from kicking there asses. See how easy it is to come up with a conspiracy theory these days? really, we weren't there, we can't possibly know. …

Re: AMD Quits Benchmark Group Implying Intel Bias

Intel kicks ass. They invest a truckload of millions on research which's why their processors outperform everything else on the market. I sense jealousy and BS. Intel had the advantage because they designed the first chip. To avoid lawsuits AMD was forced to find alternate (translation = less …

Re: 486 motherboard

I think we decided the broken corner was really just being covered by the cloth. The DALLAS thing is a really big deal - deal breaker that is. I'm sure it could be de-soldered - but not sure I would want to try. Something is telling me there are better 486 boards. Or for that matter pentium boards …

Re: Good reading for people new to retro computing

I have even thought about trying to do a site like redhill myself - but I really do not have enough hardware - not even close. And I got rid of a lot of earlier stuff (something I am regretting today). I wish I had kept that old 486 DX4 I had - with its Conner disk and VLB video card.
