Re: 430TX chipset turbo button?

elianda wrote: I really wonder what weird S7/SS7 boards you had. Every S7 board I have has working turbo functionality. Maybe it's a regional thing, but I have ~ 10 Socket 7 boards in my shed ATM - all different - and none of them have a turbo header.

Re: VLB vs PCI

I'd go VLB, building a 486 isn't about speed or minimizing hassle - for me anyway! VLB was a frankenstein bus which was pretty much 486 specific, and as such it's fun to play with. You've got PCI in your Pentium, and ISA in your 386, so you might as well give VLB a go too. It's interesting that you …

Mystery solved, it's the Music Quest card. I pulled out my trusty 386 and tried Wing Commander (disk version - thanks again Megatron!) with the Roland and it works fine. But with the Music Quest (pictured below), it hangs in the same place. So I guess that means that the Music Quest isn't 100% …

@Iris030380 and SKARDAVNELNATE Are you guys really telling me you can't find a decent game to play in 2012? A new game is released every millisecond, from development teams of all sizes and from all walks of life. Hardware is cheap and plentiful, and thanks to consoles we don't need to upgrade our …

Tried the GOG version and it doesn't work either! Same problem - the MT-32 is initialised, the game starts with all of the correct sounds / music, but about half way through the fireworks (this varies) the game hangs and the MT-32 is just stuck on a single long note with the odd firework sound …

It's all part of the commoditization of gaming where games are designed by committee to maximise sales- rather than by people who love games and have a vision of something they'd like to play, as it was in years gone by. Agreed, but... games are a commodity, and - like most big companies - Bethesda …

I wonder why GOG hobble some of the games they sell? I guess leaving the install.exe file in there might cause confusion; they don't want people running it and messing up their pre-configured DOSBOX compatible setup. It's a great service, but I really wish they'd throw in a original disk images too. …

Hmm, wonder if there aren't some more files out of that entire set that are corrupted? That's true, just because it installed doesn't mean some files still ain't broke. It only hangs if I'm using the MT-32 sound option - with Sound Blaster selected it makes it through the opening credits at least. …

Nice one megatron, that did the trick! Thanks very much for your help mate, a 20+ year old piece of computer history lives on! It was just that one file on the first disk that had been corrupted - the rest of the disks installed no problems. Now I have the game running, but it hangs just after the …

Right I've had a bit of a poke around with my trusty hex editor and have decided that my "install.dat" file is corrupted. This file is supposed to be a list of the files on each disk, but most of mine is rubbish. I've since bought the GOG version in the hope of getting a valid copy of that file, but …
