Looks ok to me, the cirrus logic chipset isn't the fastest but is very compatible and looks pretty good in my experience.

Mortal Kombat allegedly supports "roland" for music but I've tried both an mt-32 and a scc1 with it and oth sound aweful compared to FM. Damn I love that game, I'd play it with no sound at all if I had to.

It's not a great pic; there are a few traces that have lifted right up so I'm pretty sure there'd be some soldering required, and that's where I draw the line. I've come across a couple of OPTi 495slc's recently, and although it initially seemed like a useful board with the 386 / 486 support + VLB slots, it's proved to be incompatible with a couple of my favorite VLB / ISA boards.

I've never seen a functional turbo header on a socket 7 board. Sometimes they include a 'green' header in the same position, but that just puts the whole kit and kaboodle to sleep I think.

I'd go VLB, building a 486 isn't about speed or minimizing hassle - for me anyway! VLB was a frankenstein bus which was pretty much 486 specific, and as such it's fun to play with. Mystery solved, it's the Music Quest card. I pulled out my trusty 386 and tried Wing Commander (disk version - thanks again Megatron!) with the Roland and it works fine. But with the Music Quest (pictured below), it hangs in the same place. So I guess that means that the Music Quest isn't 100% …

Tried the GOG version and it doesn't work either! Same problem - the MT-32 is initialised, the game starts with all of the correct sounds / music, but about half way through the fireworks (this varies) the game hangs and the MT-32 is just stuck on a single long note with the odd firework sound …

I wonder why GOG hobble some of the games they sell? I guess leaving the install.exe file in there might cause confusion; they don't want people running it and messing up their pre-configured DOSBOX compatible setup. It's a great service, but I really wish they'd throw in a original disk images too. …

Hmm, wonder if there aren't some more files out of that entire set that are corrupted? That's true, just because it installed doesn't mean some files still ain't broke. It only hangs if I'm using the MT-32 sound option - with Sound Blaster selected it makes it through the opening credits at least. …
