I like the advantage of having SSE3 for dual booting into XP. Modern processors already run pretty hot, so the added heat isn't as much of a surprise now as it was then.

I can confirm that the GF4 Ti 4200 can run with a passive heatsink, like the GF3 Ti 200. But it does get pretty hot, and probably isn't the best thing for it in the long run. Even a small fan makes a big difference.

The only hangup I have with the Rage 128 is the terrible 16-bit dithering. Pattern dithering is ugly, and the noise dithering is nauseating on LCDs. Dithering was much better on the Rage3. I would love it if there was a way to improve on this. For example, patch the noise dithering to sample the …

You can also use a tool like GetDataBack Pro, to try and recover data from the FAT filesystem. This software has saved me many times in the past.

If you manage to get USB 2.0 working, I have only found it to be stable when used as a fixed disk. Stopping the device and removing it has always been unstable for me. It seems to work just fine with the onboard USB 1.1 ports, so I'm not certain what the issue is, exactly.

I wonder how close the functional die get to the corner. I've seen lots of these chips with chipped corners with no problems. Check the thermal paste on these old passive heatsinks. They are often dried out and the card, which already gets extremely hot, and can overheat to 100C or more as a result. Passive GeForce 8400 GS running at 100C.

Changing heat sinks on a pair of 1GHz P!!!s for my P2B-DS. Apparently i f**ked up :'( I damaged some of the ceramic capacitors on a Slot 1 Pentium 3 when removing the stock heatsink. Look closely to see if there is any damage to these components, as this is repairable. https://www.vogons.org/ …

I've never heard of a 128MB GeForce 2-anything. Even Quadro 2s were only ever 64MB. Very curious.

I think that the FX 5500 is exclusively 128-bit. I'm just spitballing, but I can't think of any examples that I have encountered otherwise.

An FX 5200 will have the same performance as an FX 5950 when the CPU is so severely underpowered. I've always wondered if these newer drivers shift TnL back onto the CPU, where it may be faster using SSE instructions. The overhead from these newer drivers makes them slower than older video cards, with a few rare exceptions. You will need at least a Coppermine-class CPU to take advantage of an FX series card. You will probably have much better performance with a TNT2 or a Rage 128 on a Pentium 2-class CPU. Maybe …

I remember single/double/quad CD drive speed was a thing. I guess because if the bit rate of the FMVs. I don't recall it ever being an issue past 4X speed drives.
