Re: Why are old computers so expensive?

I' doing an art project and need to see an EGA monitor in action. I thought I'd pick up some old hardware for under $100. But systems alone are nearly $500. What in the world is going on? Apples of the same vintage sell for much less. Anyone know what's up? My thoughts: 1. Apple stuff started being …

Re: best computer case

in Milliways
Anyone can make a case. The ones that are best have these features: 1. No sharp edges 2. No proprietary mounting rails or parts 3. 120mm or larger fan mounts, at least 1 in front and 1 in back, and for newer systems, an optional 1 on the side for the CPU. 4. Enough room to prevent HDDs and CD-ROM …

Re: Cyrix Cx486 DX40

I realize it's proprietary, that's why I was wondering if one could be custom-made. I mean, there's proprietary and there's proprietary. I wouldn't wonder that every piece the stick is made of is available seperately and that they all just need to be brought together by someone. Not me, of course, …

Re: Retro Gaming Box -- help me build it!

in PC Emulation
Voodoos don't use any IRQs, so in theory they should work -- but you might have to change their memory addresses, since they might overlap. I wouldn't know about how to make the driver control panels get along, or how to choose which adapter to use in a game. I recommended a 486 with the thought of …

Re: Building 4 Systems

Yes, I have 2 of these modules. One works fine and the other causes major instability. They are both identical, so I assume something was damaged on the one that doesn't work right. It shows up as 256kB as it should, but I can't make the computer run stably long enough to boot with it. At any rate, …

Re: Cyrix Cx486 DX40

I have one of these boards and I can definitely back up the claim that the cache module helps performance. I installed Win98SE and the difference with/without the module is very noticeable. I see L2 cache modules for other computers/printers/whatever online and I can't help but wonder if any of them …

Re: Building 4 Systems

I don't have a K6-III, unfortunately. I have plenty of K6/K6-II, though. Well, what I suppose I'll do is use the HOT-555a board with the V2 and a P233MMX. I'll use the TX97 with the V1 and a P166. The K6-II, VA503+ and Voodoo 3 go well together age-wise. What I'd really love for the V3 would be a …

Re: Building 4 Systems

I'm disappointed that the TX97 is such a dog. I've since learned it can't overclock very well either. Too bad, because the XE is in ATX form factor, and I would have been able to use one of my cases. Now I'll have to find another AT case. I realize the Voodoo is wasted on a 5x86 system. But to do it …
