At some point in time I was able to make Windows 2000 use the Voodoo 2 to display the desktop, some specific driver allowed this. Worked fine if I remember correctly. Not sure how 😀

G4 Cube, iMac G4, Macintosh SE/SE30 etc (no web browsing but can do "internet"). Maybe the TAM. Current gen iMac isn't bad either.

For me it depends on how much time I have and what my goal is. Normally I get enjoyment from building a specific machine to match the age/period, so this involves finding the correct parts and building a machine. Yeah all the Russian dash cam videos on youtube always show drivers (of cars too) doing this kind of thing, I don't really understand it, must make it very difficult to avoid a crash!

soldier of fortune, AvP2, system shock 2 or Half Life 1/2 (they hunger, HL1 mod, is really great) would be a good start IMHO.

In retail form I'd say the Voodoo 4 is the rarest, then the various Mac options and then the V5 5500. In Australia there seemed to be a fair amount of Powercolor Voodoo 4s, I have a few of those.

In 1998 I had a 486 DX2/66 (I was 12 at the time), I mostly played Fury 3, Myst, Duke Nukem 3D, Sim City 200 and maybe a bit of Warcraft II. Then in early-mid 99 I picked up a Pentium 133 with 2mb S3 Trio. This allowed me to play Starcraft and probably not much else. I would have attempted Tribes …

Yep that would do it. I have a couple of trays of new Voodoo 2 texture unit chips somewhere I purchased a while ago. Got them for less than $1 each. Still you'd need to design the PCB and source the other components (RAM, DAC if for Voodoo 2, glue logic etc), once you've done that you'd need to get …

I disagree, if it really was that easy we'd have seen it by now. Maybe if you could program an existing FPGA to emulate it, but then that isn't the real thing now anyway.
