440BX is basically it if you want an Intel chipset with ISA. Some of them have Tualatin modified BIOS's available, pin mod required. Beware the OCed AGP bus. I'd favour VIA boards.... something like an ASUS CUV4X + pinmodded Tually should be fine. The 89MHz AGP bus was a matter of reality around …

USB 1.1 headers, sure. Most of them don't have integrated audio, so you may need to pick the right sound card and probably also do some custom wiring.

98SE will only support global digital audio extraction with WDM audio drivers installed. Some programs like WMP9 support it independently. VxD drivers are often preferable or the only option, and then you're stuck with the CD emulation program's implementation of fake analog audio extraction. I bet …

No special trick to removing the spacebar, just a bit of pressure. It does have a stabilizer bar and a grounding wire clipped to it. Take care handling the chemicals.

Congrats! There are several mechanical parts that wear out on these things in general, and it certainly doesn't take 20 years to happen. With a relatively common drive as that, sourcing donor drives for parts wouldn't be an impossibility, if you thought it worth the trouble.

Mine came from the pharmacy. I've also seen 17.5% and 12% solutions sold as gardening supplies. The higher concentration would be better, and if anything I would assume the stuff is easier to get ahold of in Russia.

I replaced a few missing or worn keycaps and a yellowed spacebar on mine with parts ordered from ClickyKeyboards. The shipping cost a fortune, though. I've used 20% hydrogen peroxide to bleach other yellowed plastic parts before. It would probably work.

The original OPL sound vs. CQM must be the only reason. You can also add MIDI DB capability that way, but a Sound Blaster wouldn't be my first choice for that.

For me it's about the hardware. Original feeling keyboards, mice and gameport controllers, MIDI and GUS music, 3dfx Glide and PowerVR graphics, etc. There's good emulation for a lot of basic stuff, but you can't emulate everything.

They wires come out cleanly, just need to lift the tiny lip with a small screwdriver, the tip of an exacto knife or something. The careful part is in not breaking the lip on any pins you still need to hold a wire in later.

You can usually mod those connectors if they're approximately the right pitch, by carefully extracting the wires and moving them around. The one I currently use is a 1x6 that I've cut up good. 🤣
