CD audio is probably the definitive version of the music. For General Midi, there are several options. Roland Sound Canvases sound very good, or alternatively a Yamaha XG, or one of many fine options of SoundFonts enabled sound cards.

I don't know much first-hand about running these dual CPU systems, but the gut feeling is that games didn't make use of multiple threads at that time or for some time after.

I think people advocate a paranoid level of precaution against static electricity; never had anything damaged in 15 years, and I've never used a bracelet or gone out of my way to look for special surfaces. Some of the AWE32's combine a good OPL implementation with decent sound quality, easily expandable memory and daughter board support (a little buggy at worst).

It was basically the ultimate form of dial-up internet, but was completely replaced by DSL. They're probably more useless than 56k analog modems now.

Now I'm properly reading the site, the troubleshooting section does say they only work on the right type of card. Must be due to some difference between the Gold's 4MB onboard setup vs. the Value's 512KB. Creative's modules do work on either, I believe(?).

I haven't had any trouble with the Adlib ports with the Classic. I think it's pretty much the same thing as the ACE. It does actually have a physical joystick port that you can enable or disable, instead of the ACE's 'virtual' one. 🤣

That's odd; 30-35 fps is a weak show in Doom. No experience with that board, though.
