Re: Cheapie pentium 3 retro rig build

EDIT: i looked on the cpu for the info . 600E,256,100,1.65V . Ah, good, it's a coppermine already then. So you'd be good for faster CPUs if you ever care to use them. That's a beefy heatsink for a coppermine, it looks the same as the ones I've seen on 2.0V Deschutes and Katmais. The heatsink itself …

Re: Cheapie pentium 3 retro rig build

By the size of that heatsink, I'm guessing that's a Katmai 600MHz (2.0V). If you have any interest in going to a Coppermine later, it's possible that board might support them. You'd need to check the part number on the voltage regulator chip. From the photo it looks like it's probably the chip near …

Re: Is there any Socket 370 Board with 3 ISA Slots?

Anyone heard of a 3 ISA that uses intel? Anyone think the VIA is perfectly fine and that I'm just simply mistaken? I got very frustrated with VIA on my Super 7 board, especially with AGP. I'm sure they must have improved by the P3 era, but I think they were still known for being a bit of a pain. …

Re: Want to build powerful PII machine

I remember a long time ago seeing an article, I think on Tom's Hardware, which considered whether SSE and 3DNow would make 3D accelerator cards obsolete. Back in the day I got hold of an updated version of MASM just so I could try writing 3DNow code for my (then-new) K6-3, which they labeled as "K3D …

Re: HP Vectra XU 90C

First of all, Socket 7 came along with the Pentium MMX. The older non-MMX chips are Socket 5, and those definitely are the older non-MMX chips. Thanks for the explanation. That's a strange revelation for me - I've gone all this time thinking the P54Cs were socket 7. I had no idea that was really …

Re: Pentium Restoration Project

Looks very nice. I would like to suggest getting a different keyboard adapter. Those rigid 1-piece adapters like you're using have a tendency to either fall out, or get knocked out when they hit up against something. Every time the PS/2 port gets accidentally hotplugged, it's maybe a 5% chance of …

Re: Tualatin "Beast" In progress

I just read your description of what the old board was doing. It's possible that was caused by failing capacitors. When they start to go, the board can start to act up strangely, especially with more load. I've heard of people putting generic Radio Shack caps on a motherboard, which are much higher …
