I only use CF cards for retro machines (pre-Pentiums). I like the speed increase factor. Like SSD's now-a-days 😁

I've seen Quantum Maverick 540A go for 50€ in eBay auction. But this is an extreme as usually they go for much less. I only keep smaller then a few GB. But I like Quantums, so I have them up to 40GB.

Runs quite nicely on 386DX-40, 32MB ram, 1GB CF card and Cirrus Logic 5429 2MB ISA.

Depends on the context, but I assume that he was talking about the progress. 286 was 16-bit, 386 32-bit and in this matter he was right, 486 was still "only" 32-bit.

Cyrix 486slc-33 is on par with 386DX-33, even on 16bit and without external on-board cache and it's around 50% faster than 386SX-33. I had it in 1993 and also have one in my collection. 486dlc is much more powerfull.

I've read that a 486SX 20MHz is about equal to a 386DX 40MHz but with no co-processor. How does lacking that impact games of that era? I personaly own a 486SX 25 PC i'm trying to get working but have run into IRQ errors but how good is the performance? It has 4MB of 30 pin simms and a 425mb hdd, …

It is wider then sockets on any of my 486 boards that support 1Mb chips. Both of these are 4cm in length but upper one is 10mm wide, while the bottom one is 7mm wide. Maybe the upper (wider) one isn't a cache chip to be used on PC motherboards?

Look at the picture. The chip at the bottom is standard PC cache chip, but what is the one on the top? It has the same leg number but it's larger - wider.

16/24-bit are going to be slow even on an accelerated ISA cards, just too much bandwidth is needed. But 8-bit will be fast. Tested on Win95 with 386DX-40 and CL-5429 2MB ISA. 16-bit is like 10x slower then 8-bit, but it's still faster then 8-bit on Trident 8900 😉

CL-GD5429 is an overkill for 286. It's better suited for fast 386 or 486 with ISA only. On the other hand CL-GD5420 isn't anything special and it is more on par with Trident 8900.

I run Windows 3.1 on 286-16 with 1MB back in time 😁 But this really isn't recommended. With upgraded ram to 2MB it was way better. With 4MB and CF card for HDD I guess a little 286 would run Windows 3.1 nicely 😁 I'm still waiting to buy a good 286 motherboard for my 286 build.

On 286-16 there is about 5% difference between Trident 8900 and Tseng ET4000 - tested with 3Dbench 1.0. So not really a major issue.
