The game used to have issues on Windows 7 (/Vista?) and could only be launched with the "-windowgui" command line switch. The exe has been hex edited to add the new resolutions. The launcher just writes to the registry so that the game uses the right resolution.

You could try Dxwnd and "Limit Resources". If that fails a VM would probably do the trick.

Here's an Autohotkey script that should fix it. Have it running in the background and press both left and right Alt after launching the game.

Drakensang now crashes at launch. I tried both lowest and highest settings. Drakensang The River of Time works with highest settings (SM 3.0) apart from the intro. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic seems to work flawlessly, apart from intro and mouse cursor not displaying. Darkstar One working fine …

Did you try Windows compatibility settings? On Windows 10 the option is called Reduced Color Mode. You can select 8 or 16 bit but on Windows 7 and prior it might only be 8 bit IIRC. The Compatibility Toolkit could possibly help in this case.

You can download older versions of a game using the GOG Galaxy client. Galaxy is Windows 7+ only but you should be able to just copy the game directory to your XP PC.

These were the command I used: download_depot 405820 405821 3630272021912914252 download_depot 405820 405822 4192801109945849138 Adding both file sets to the most recent game version was needed to make the game compatible with XP.

I tried the Steam version in a XP VM and got the same error. (BTW as it turns out the game is DRM free.)
