That's a really extreme answer to this relatively simple problem, Llewen. There's no reason for you to do that, if you'd just be a bit more experimental about things. From what you've said, it doesn't sound like you've tried very many of the suggestions we've given you.

If your BIOS is that unfriendly, perhaps you should consider getting a new motherboard. My personal recommendations are Microstar -- they're GREAT motherboards. I've had three of them, and they've all run perfectly. (They are overclockable out of the box, too, but don't mess around with that …

Problems like these sound like a W9x thing. I made a boot disk a looong time ago to resolve these problems by booting into pure DOS with, IIRC, 603KB conventional RAM.
