Re: 5.25" Floppy Drives

Well to be honest I took the half hieght drive out of the PCjr to write bootleg copies of some games to diskette so that I could try them out on the PCjr. I plopped in into a '96 Packard Bell platinum 55 which is acting as my gateway computer between the ancient and the modern and I wrote the …

Re: How many use linux?

I like Linux overall, but there are some things that drive me crazy. I can certainly understand some of the frustrations expressed in this thread. Go ahead, try to play an encrypted DVD on Linux. I dare you. Actually you can watch encrypted movies my friend, all you need is to install the libdvdcss …

Anyone play Close Combat 2 still?

So after years and years I finally got a copy of Close Combat 2 : A Bridge Too Far and I'm wondering if anyone here plays online? I've heard you can use game radar to play against other ppl on the internet. Also does anyone own the new one yet? (Gateway to Caen) It looks pretty fab but for 30$ I'm a …

Re: How many use linux?

Very nice desktops. The mac one is kind of impressive though although personally I never went in for all the mac style shinies. When was the last one taken? That looks pretty early. lol Here's my personal setup, just bland old MATE. Nothing fancy but it looks clean and is easy to navigate. Not sure …

Re: How many use linux?

Ok I didn't notice he wrote "toy" on there but you have to admit it's WAAAAY over priced and it could certainly be better optimized. All the fluff for the general populace (Windows 8 I'm looking at you) is really annoying. The majority of people you run into running windows use it as a gaming …

Re: How many use linux?

Wel personally I think canonical is in for a fall anyhow since their OS sucks and their practices haven't really agreed with the community. lol But yeah I see what you are saying, doesn't mean I think linux is going to putt around doing nothing, but I see that maybe no large player will emerge and …

Re: How many use linux?

Word processing, spreadsheets, and simple 2D drawings aren't "serious work" in the scheme of things. That's not to diminish your work or effort, by the way, it's just to give some perspective. Computers are used all the way from a college student typing up their work, through to engineering and …

Re: How many use linux?

I have a good freind who uses Gentoo on an IBM Thinkpad R52 from 2005 it works great and he uses it like mad. So I know the older thinkpads work fine with linux, its just a matter of these new ones not being particulariliy designed well. Also that's a pretty slow pour on that laptop don't you think? …

Re: How many use linux?

From what I've heard regarding modern lenovo computers is that they suck. They are extremely cheaply made and often have hardware issues not like the old IBM computers. It's too bad IBM sold out of the home computer market.

Re: How many use linux?

Maybe I'm just hanging out in the wrong forums, but enthusiasm for Linux on the desktop seems to be somewhat diminished as of late. Desktop Linux is pretty exciting these days due to Valve's involvement (Steam Machines & SteamOS). Gabe Newell said Linux is the future of gaming. That's what Linux …

Re: How many use linux?

(like having a desire to use one's computer to actually do things instead of endlessly customizing and tinkering and trying out one half-completed doodad after another) What things are you doing because I find linux to be a very productive OS. Besides using it for various entertainment options ( …

Re: How many use linux?

Windows is just a media toy with expensive software suites. If you really honestly believe this, then I pity you. Lol I pity you for not seeing the truth in this. There are plenty of open source alteratives for everything you want to do, seriously at this point there is no reason to not use linux.

Re: crashes in Ubuntu fix

To be truthful I have never compiled a program on linux, I've never had to. I've also never written any scripts to do things in linux once again because I've never had to. All I'm saying is give it a try, too many people listen to the mac and windows fanboys and assume using linux is over their head …

Re: How many use linux?

Man you must be super lucky cause I've never gotten anything to work correctly in WINE. 🤣 It may be the games I'm trying to run though since they were always kinda finnicky.

Re: crashes in Ubuntu fix

Yeah I'm not sure why VLC is not in the repos by default since it is open source (thats what I mean by free). I would have to disagree with you about choices, fedora comes in many different flavors (known as spins), but one thing common to them all is the fact that they are all made to work and work …

Re: 5.25" Floppy Drives

lol As far as I know he doesn't have a collection. But yeah sorry that sounded one selfish of me, I didn't really expect anything in return but in the past in other circumstances he has always found ways to be annoying. Also that is a scary thought lol. My nieghbor on Vogons, no I doubt he is he …

Re: How many use linux?

As I said in the other thread. I use Debian Wheezy with packages from Backports (kernel, graphics drivers, etc). I use MATE as my desktop of choice. I wouldn't recommend it though. Debian is always stale compared to every other Desktop, unless you run the Testing (currently Jessie) branch. For …
