It would be nice if somebody put together an adapter that you could plug between an ATX power supply and motherboard, that adapter would then feed the motherboard 5v derived from a 12v rail using a DC to DC converter .

I do not believe so . Best bet is probably recapping (or having someone do it) an otherwise decent vintage power supply .

If the monitor has both DVI and VGA, and motherboard BIOS lets you chose primary video card, then a combination of a of an AGP Nvidia TNT (or better) on DVI and a PCI Voodoo 3 on VGA (or other) is the best of both worlds . That's what I use

All difference on the 3D/XG card is in analog domain, but as I don't have that card I cannot really say more than that.
