Re: Demo songs for Roland SC-88

Not all demo songs of the SC and SD modules are included in the devices' ROMs; most usually came with the driver disks or CDs. Of course, the 88Pro MIDIs and many things designed for that module don't work properly on a 88, due to a bunch of missing instruments, effects, and parameters :P Anyways, …

Re: Sound Canvas model selection

How can this be true? The 8820 and 50 are identical modules, with some minor revisions the 8850 had at the end being the main difference (other than digital output on the 8820, and screen on the 8850). The legacy maps should be identical between them. While interesting, for most people these are …

Re: Sound Canvas model selection

I recommend the SC-55 and SC-88Pro, myself. The 55 provides top-notch GM/GS compatibility (especially for those titles you mentioned), while the 88Pro will happily cover many titles with more complex MIDI tracks (usually Japanese titles) and offer more things (in particular the EFX insertion effects …

Re: Roland Sound Canvas Sc-50

A few other GS-compatible modules (eg. Roland SC-50, Edirol SD-90) lack the MT-32 map, but these are usually the exception rather than the norm. As for MUNT, I do find it periodically useful as well (particularly for those things that need a first-generation MT-32, or when travelling). Given the …

Re: Hidden SC-55 in Integra-7

Can you make a few recordings, by chance, of the mode? I recall similar support was available in the SD-50 (according to a thread on the former QuestStudios) - which was not completely accurate versus an actual 55-line unit, but it used many similar samples to one and thus was somewhat accurate ( …

Re: Windows XP graphics card recommendation?

Joining the bandwagon, I also use a GTX 750Ti with my C2Q Q8300-equipped XP unit. It works quite well there with everything I have tested so far, all whilst being cool, quiet, and power efficient. Other options might include the R7 2xx series of cards, which have shown themselves (courtesy of Phil's …

Re: Roland SD-90 assistance

None of the behaviour you mentioned is normal, unfortunately. The knobs should have some resistance and distinctive physical feedback when they are rotated in either direction. Some repair might be needed, but I don't recall any exact procedures.... :\

Re: Roland SD-90 assistance

The SD-90 is configured to use USB for MIDI input by default. To change that, turn on the SD-90 and then press the SYSTEM button once it gets to the main screen. There press the Page Down button once, and rotate the leftmost of the three knobs to change the MIDI Startup option from USB to MIDI. …

Re: Seeking Drivers for Roland Edirol SD-90...

I haven't had problems with the drivers on English versions of XP, myself. I had my SD-90 previously connected to a Win10 system, for which I recall having to enter Windows' Test Mode and modding an INF file in order to get the Win8.1 drivers working. I believe I still have the modded drivers …

Re: Yamaha MU2000EX

Indeed, most of the PLG boards are really designed for music creation work, as they tend to add all sorts of synthesis methods (FM - DX, analog - AN, virtual acoustic - VL, formant - SG, even an XG board for stock MU sounds) to compatible modules and synthesisers. Additionally, when they are …

Re: Yamaha MU2000EX

Congrats on the MU2000! I wonder if there are any considerations for PLG modules down the line? :3 Looking at the manual, there is mention of the record MIDI function on page 155, and going by the constant mentions of the memory card in the MU SEQ section it is located in, I assume it requires a …

Re: Roland SC-8850 Sound Module

Congratulations on your acquisition! Commence the SD-20 demo MIDI recordings (albeit recorded on a SD-90, a notably different cousin). I don't find the module all that interesting, myself - I can't find a good use for mine other than as a portable source of certain SD-90 instruments! :P The GM2 …

Re: Roland SC-8850 Sound Module

The 8820 is indeed another popular choice - it doesn't have all the 8850 extras (such as the stereo instruments), but it does share a similar synth engine to the 88Pro, making it somewhat better for compatibility. Sure, it doesn't have the front panel or screen of the 8850 and most other SC modules, …

Re: Roland SC-8850 Sound Module

I've got one of these (and used it to contribute the SC-8850 demo MIDI recordings for a Sound Canvas module recording project ). Here are my thoughts on the module: For SC-55 MIDIs (ie. most western games, many DOS/X68000/PC-98 titles), the module's compatibility is at least serviceable with the SC- …

Re: MIDI Devices 101

The MT-32 New is a second generation LA synth. It does not have the fast vibrato. Only the 3rd generation Roland CM32LN and CM500 have that bug. Ah, that is what I get for responding at a late time. I stand corrected, thanks! Yes but the ones from Japan sell for around 60$ while the ones from US …

Re: MIDI Devices 101

As someone who likes sound modules and vintage synths quite a bit, I do enjoy having them around for both games and musical tinkering, so I heartily support the endeavour. Before you delve into this, however, I recommend figuring out specific games you wish to savour the MIDI music options on. That …
