Not the same target era but going by hwbot results, I noticed a Pentium Gold 7505 is nearly 1:1 performance with x56xx xeons(xeon versions of the first i7s 965/975 2008-2009) overclocked @4.5GHz, laptops with 7505s go for $85-120 on ebay.

I'd rather play serf city, settlers 2 & dune 2 with DOSBox over listed, top tier is top tier. dune 2 music, fx and ambiance is the best, same deal with serf city & settlers 2, later versions don't hold a candle to the OGs. windows 98 era; close combat: a bridge too far. Couldn't resist. Gravis Ultrasound NMI handling and SBOS has been a bit of a mystery, I don't know if it was figured out with pcem, qemu or mame since last I saw it discussed with an attempt in DOSBox but this might shed some light.

Anyone know how to remove a pending order on gog? I already have crusaders kings ii and have a triple order with no visible option to remove, used to be you could un-select at checkout but no such option is showing, not an issue at the moment but the next time a checkout comes up I will be stuck …

pcem is a slow emulator compared to others so it takes an overkill amount of cpu power than what should be needed to emulate low end cpu speed. It is what it is. The options are optimize it or one of its forks or add/port x desired functionality in pcem if missing in other emulators: dosbox, mame, …

Also heard of the opposite, where cards need an inspection for broken solder joints where a reflow would help. I still suggest the youtuber hw diag/fix channels as a guide, they should lead you to a solution faster than my bag of marbles recollection of diagnosis.

If software isn't detecting the card then I'd start with checking that voltage is alive, correct, all around the card, and looking for shorts. No power, no software reporting, a short, locked up, no software reporting. Scratch that, another first basic test before this is trying to identify hot …
