I had the same mainboard in a "multimedia" computer sold by Neckermann (Germany). It didn't have the same Multi-I/O card though, the I/O card had a UMC chipset and there was a CL-GD5424 with 1 MB. CPU was the UMC 486 with 40 MHz, which wasn't a bad performer for an SX.

I would choose the one with the bigger cooler/better fan, since fans on video cards tend to die a lot.

Can't comment on the overall value, since that would mean picking out the prices for every single component by hand, but it sounds solid. i5 is about the best you can buy for a gaming PC, i7 will only be marginally faster if at all. What I'm guessing is that the BIOS switch for disabling L2 cache doesn't work on a Coppermine CPU (after all, the board is designed for Slot 1 CPUs with external L2 cache). That would explain the identical score with L2 off. Any processor would be crawling with L1 off, so the second score should be …

That tower is just epic, and nice to see the early Athlon in Slot-A form. That computer must've been about as good as you could get when it was built, with a 700 MHz Athlon and a GeForce 256 DDR! Strange that it didn't have 256 or 512MB of RAM to match though. Is it an Argon Athlon, or a newer one? …

I very much prefer the AdLib, it sounds much more refined than the SB16, even if the compositions aren't optimized for it. Thanks for this well written post!

I've killed my KT266 board by plugging in a RAM stick incorrectly :( That was almost 10 years ago and I still regret it. I need the ISA slot for DOS though. IIRC, USB on the KT133 did work originally, but that was mostly with input devices. USB mass storage wasn't really around back then. No problem …

This is why those old school Enermax and Antec units with the strong 5v rail and -5v rail are almost required for these beastly Athlon rigs.
