For a p4, get something with a copper heatsink and a quiet fan. I've had a thermaltake spark 7 since the era and updated it a couple years ago with a fan built for quiet operation. The p4 generates a lot of heat, but there's no reason to put up with overblown fan noise.

In the R400 I have, the sound card was the Turtle Beach Montego A3DXSTREAM (1). It's a great card for Windows, but I don't use it for DOS. The wave table card interface does have the hanging note bug.

The artifacts are a good indicator of an overheat, but not the only possibility. Is the card overclocked, or has it ever been? I have a voodoo 3 PCI that was overclocked at one point, overheated, then clocked back down to stock and it will still exhibit some artifacts.

Smoothness with a ball mouse is all about keeping the ball and rollers clean. It's just maintenance. Optical is no fuss, no muss. A ball mouse also won't have the movement resolution, if that's more of what you mean.

Your hunch is correct. The games' maps were built on square blocks of different heights and plane angles. Tr3 used triangle based maps, but still not true polygonal builds.
