I would recommend to go with and LBA ISA or PCI card in one of the slots you have left. Or try to find an bios upgrade for your motherboard. Iam not really font of that DDO overlay software.. Good on you. Very similar in spec to my original 286. Look forward to hearing about any updates changes you make. Certainly agree with your comments about ESS sound cards 😉 They "just work" without too much effort at all. Most of all have fun with it.

Apart from my EGA monitor on my XT Turbo and built-in 14" vga on two all-in-one Compaqs I can't be bothered with anything under 17" these days. Use an 18" Trinitron with my 286 and 386 systems.

Agreed, but the point I'm trying to make is it will be better than Freedos as it stands on older set ups. I personally prefer to use MS Dos 5a on my current 286 system. You don't need to buy it but some folk like to have a boxed set of software sitting along side their older systems. And it still does what it was designed to do. You may want to consider using FreeDOS instead, or alternatively DR-DOS/OpenDOS. It doesn't seem like anyone has been able to confirm the existence of a program that specifically requires MS-DOS 6.22 and that won't work with FreeDOS. IIRC the upgrade disks just check to see it the drive is bootable. Needs to be fat16 for obvious reasons.
