It's certainly not rocket science 😉 I use D-Link DE220s and GeniusLan(kye) ISA NICs without any problems whatsoever. With a little patch you can even get the MS Dos Client to act as an smb server.

The only differculty is you need to drop the security/disable settings of modern windows SMB2 & 3 iirc. I don't use it so others can provide more detail I'm sure.

That's linux. IIRC Irssi is a nice Linux console client. I've never used IRC in DOS. What clients exist for it? You've never heard or ircjr? Well I have two Compaq all-in-ones, 486 and P75, with built-in 14" crts. My 386DX25 and 286/12 share an 18" crt. The rest of the 486s, RicPCs, Acorn A4000s, P200mmx and up use an LCD of some description. I have 4 17" crts out in the shed doing nothing.

What most people seem to forget is you can disable, or even remove, most of win98s Active Desktop functions using various tools and replace it's shell with win95s. Win98 would be useful on a high end 486 class with pci for the usb mass storage support alone. Of course finding a suitable usb …

DrDos 6.0 uses HIDOS.SYS for relocating the kernal etc on a 286 class machines This is from my manuals MemoryMAX chapter table. Renamed HIMEM.SYS in later versions I gather(ie Novell Dos 7 up). DrDos 6.0s TaskMAX can run on any 286,386, 386sx or 486 with 1meg of ram. This is also from the manual. …

Doens't DR-DOS come with "EMM286"? That should help you get some UMB memory (if it's available). It should be possible to get most of your 640kb back. Even on an XT, I can get about 620kb. This was just a boot without help comparison just compare the difference between various Dos. It really shows …
