I had a Savage 4 and a 500Mhz K6-2, the S3 Driver wasnt good at all but improved later a Lot, so i could play Tons of Games,

Thats simple, you need to add a Parameter if i remember right setup.exe /X:16 This should bypass Memory Check (Installer Bug)

There are parameters for setups to bypass Memory check. What programms to you try to install ? Internet Explorer ?

practical useable on 386 ? I did run a DRx2 50Mhz with 25Mhz BUS and a 25Mhz DX25 386 on Windows 95B. With 8Mb Ram it did run well, as long i didnt load modern Software on it. Jasc Paint Shop Pro and such Stuff did run ok. Its no Fun with 8Mb RAM if you really want to Start working with more then 1 …

Did you try to reheat every Solder Joint, and apply some flux, maybe some layer isnt connected right! You can hotswap your BIOS Chip in a another Board and check if it works. Make a DUMP and check with a hexedit etc. Sure that this is Right ? i never seen a Asus Board with White Space as + Mark.

i got 64Mb in my DX4, runs DOS, Windows 95 and Debian Etch. 32Mb wasnt enough for Win95 and Linux. (Cacheable Area is 64Mb so i'm fine.) 16Mb is enough for MS-Dos. Most Games don't requiere more RAM. A DVD-Rom is just a Bigger CD-Rom. No Issue, even on 286 and with SCSI on 8088s.

PCI and Soundblaster isnt really combatible. All PCI Cards need EMM386.EXE loaded and some special TSR for getting SB Combatible. This means all Games that don't like protect mode won't run with PCI Cards.

XP SP3 is much faster on my PII as 2000 with all Updates. And has better Driver Support, if you going to use it for Games and want to use both CPUs, i would definitly recommend XP. With Dualcore Patch you will also benefit from better Thread Sheduling on XP. (Windows 2003 Kernel)

Even older Software can use a Big Memory. 1Gb on a PII 450 will still give you a improvement. If you use older Software like Photoshop, Premiere 6 you will benefit from it. or using Multiple Software Instances at same time. Switching beetween Game and Desktop will Alt + Tab will faster if lots of …

S3 Wrapper for GLquake works only with Virge, best with Virge 325 4Mb. For 2Mb you have to force 320x200 Resolution. Trio3D is different thing.

I use a 077 OAK with 1Meg in a Harris 286 16mhz, and switching to ET4000 or Fast Cirrus Logic does gives only a very small speed boost. If Software is ET4000 optimized the situation is a bit different.
