Sounds like you're using a ripped version which would explain why it can't detect the CD since it's not a real version. My Bioforge runs perfectly without having to take any special steps.

Make sure your soundblaster settings are correct - set them manually if need be, since the game doesn't always detect the correct settings.

I noticed that the latest DOSBOX is more sensitive to sound. I could run Windows 3.1 at 15000 cycles before, now only 8000 before my sound messes up. Oddly enough, at 15000 cycles I rarely reached 100% CPU.

The vanilla DOSBOX 0.63 is many months outdated - the CVS builds let you double the amount. Of course, a P4, I noticed, is less able than an AMD 64 with the same Ghz amount. My P4 2.6 is far slower than my old AMD 2400+ too!

Also, current disk drives are utter crap - they actually WRECK disks. Want a few examples? I used one disk a hundered times on my old 486 that I use for old games, and it never gave an error. I used it twice in my AMD 64 3000+ PC which has a Sony disk drive, and it got corrupted and damaged. In …

Try 75000 cycles or more - your CPU can handle that much easily. Mine is only an AMD 64 3000+ and can run AFU at 75000 cycles. 8500 compares to a low 486 - no way this is enough to run a game that was intended for an early Pentium!

Wow does that strum still work on modern machines ?? For people who don't know: Quest for Fame was operated using a "strum" which could be hooked up on your serial port. You had to play "tunes" in the game by moving the strum with your hand.

Both of course - and it's only logical - DOSBOX has far better control over image mounting because it happens completely internally, while with a CD drive and Daemon Tools etc, it depends on hardware/software outside of DOSBOX.

You must have DOSBOX pretty badly set up then. Future Shock is perfectly playable and fluent - and that was when I tested it at only 30000 cycles, while my AMD 64 3200+ can easily do 65000-75000 now.

I'll put this in a big font: Mounting a CD as an image in DOSBOX results in better compatibility and nearly always helps if a game won't detect the CD A lot of people don't know this - so far not a single game that gave a CD error still gave it after I made an image I then mounted.

I think output may work - I always use Direct3D. Gives better performance too.

Just dug this up again - I meant that the game wouldn't let me turn left and right under Virtual PC. Not that the game couldn't, but it seems to be a weird bug.

Genewars runs fine under DOSBOX for me - try the different patches that add more VESA support.

Ooh yeah, that was one game I couldn't remember the name off - I could imagine it in my head, but just couldn't remember the name. EDIT: just gave it a go, still quite a bit of fun. Reminds me a great deal of Commander Keen though 😜
