Re: A tale of two PSUs

http://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=37498 In this thread I present some psus from the early 00s. One of them is Herolchi 250W (same platform as yours) that I turned into a 300W unit after replacing the primaries with bigger ones and doing some other minor changes in the values of the …

Re: A tale of two PSUs

This Herolchi platform is decent. I have seen the 250W version and the 300W version before and although those units are old (2000-2003 era) they are still functioning. All they need is a full recap and maybe some mods. This psu has no 2 transistor 5vsb circuit, meaning it is safe from overvolting …

Re: A tale of two PSUs

Could you post a photo of the Rubycon caps you pulled out along with their series and uF V? Those are valuable capacitors.

Re: A tale of two PSUs

It is very hard to get caps from stores in Greece. They sell Chinese crap and 99% of the times the caps are general purpose 105 C or even 85 C capacitors.. http://www.hlektronika.gr/forum/showthread.php?t=36439 Μπορεί να πάρει με τη σειρά τα μαγαζιά σε αυτό το λινκ, αλλά επειδή έχω ρωτήσει κι εγώ …

Re: A tale of two PSUs

The 2 blue caps are TMR series, entry level low esr capacitors of a very bad capacitor manufacturer. You can also use general purpose caps on -12V and -5v. Definitely use EXCLUSIVELY low esr caps for 5vsb. Low esr caps is preferable for 3.3V, 5V and 12V too. EDIT: No need to recap Rubycons  : …

Re: A tale of two PSUs

Nooo! Never apply glue! It limits air paths around the caps, transfers heat from hot parts to caps and is of little or no use at all.. There are many types of glue used in psus. The worst of all is the dark yellow / brown glue that turns black with age and heat and gets corrosive and conductive. …

Re: A tale of two PSUs

I just opened up a 12 year old 380W PSU. It has never been opened for cleaning before, the "warrenty void" sticker was still in one piece. I got the PSU with a high end socket 775 motherboard, CPU, memory and video card bundle so it seems the PSU has been hard at work up until very recently and I …

Re: A tale of two PSUs

Hello, this is my first post here! Those capacitors are in series, so the circuit sees 1 capacitor with double voltage (200V+200V=400V) and half the total capacitance. As a rule of thumb this total capacitance is approximately the maximum wattage the psu can do, as long as the psu is not ACTIVE PFC. …
