Re: Zip, Jaz, Bernouilli and other similar storage systems - can you determine how many hours of duty do they have?

Zip and Jaz drives may accumulate contamination on the head sliders over time. They are in direct contact with the data carrier during operation. Bernoulli should be more durable since it doesn't come in contact with the media during operation (There are some exceptions due to the loading mechanism …

Re: Rust on hard disk

Visable on most test points, J2 (Jtag for factory burn in), non-masked vias and screw holes. Looks like damaged around E3 - E12 as it got uner the solder mask. These pcb-s are made to order. WD, Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba don't make these in house. They all use 3-4 vendors, even in the same family …

Re: Rust on hard disk

Those exposed copper contacts are prone to oxidisation. You can get it off with a mild-hard eraser (for pencils or pens). What migth cause faliure on that pcb is if the interface, headstack and motor contacts get corroded. Most pre 2000 era drives with more gold coated contacts might be okay. The …

Re: A tale of two PSUs

Measure the voltages under load and see if theres any fluctuation or anomaly. If your 386 gets unstable, freezes, randomly restarts, hdd starts clicking you should consider inspecting the power unit. Those fuhjyyu brand capacitors could be anything from ok to developing some internal short and …

Re: A tale of two PSUs

I suspect the EVER-branded one is of higher quality. The OCTANE/OCTEK doesn't have proper, full input EMI filtering. Just one X2 pp film capacitor at C31. The fan control circuit might also be 'cost saved' or not implemented at all. Total output power is around 140Watt. Sigle transistor controlled …
