The problem I had was imaging a laptop drive which had a proprietary OEM partition. Clonezilla refused to copy it because it was 'dirty', but there was no way of running chkdsk on it.

I think with Windows 9x you can just use WinImage? It's what I use to image old DOS drives. ETA: regarding Clonezilla - is there a way of forcing it to copy 'dirty' NTFS drives?

Is anyone using these BD-R XL 100 GB disks? I have a drive capable of burning them but have never used them.

Well yes the problem with tape has always been cost. Cheap tapes are too small to be useful and large tapes are too expensive to be economical. Tape will probably never see widespread use outside of corporate environments. (That reminds me, wasn't there a way of using VHS tape to back up computer …

I asked about this because when I started messing with NT 4.0 a few years ago I moved some useful tools I had written myself to the NT computers but got strange errors when I tried to run them.

A problem I've found with 5.25" disks is when they don't turn smoothly in their cases. (You can hear them squealing when spun). That messes up the drive motors and causes malfunctions that persist even when reading OK disks. Taking the drive apart and cleaning/oiling it seems to help. Always check …

Are the disks shedding gunk onto the heads? Are they turning smoothly in their cases?

Fewer moving parts, less complexity, less vulnerability to physical shocks. If your data is worth it to you then tape is the way to go.

OT: can you run programs compiled with modern versions of VC++ on Windows NT 4.0 (and earlier...)? What is likely to be broken in such an environment?

I also see references to something called ATI Rave. This is a graphics API? I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Rage II series. My iMac G3 233 for example has a Rage IIc with 2MB of VRAM. I believe this model has an expansion slot? Upgrade video cards were produced for it but they are very rare. …
