The only problem I noticed running 2 optical drives on the JMB was that the second drive is only detected in Windows (after loading the driver), so you can't boot from it. I don't know the reason for this since the first drive works without it.

If you have PCI-X slots then you should be looking at the RocketRAID 1820A or 2220. The 1820A is SATA I but is still faster than the SATA II 1740 due to PCI-X.

Yes, I learned this the hard way. I'm much more careful about this now than I was back then (2009).

Yes, I think the only data loss I ever had with this card was when migrating a 3 drive RAID 5 array to 4 drives. The computer crashed midway and I lost the entire array.

That's just an oldschool 3.3V AGP card. It'll only go into oldschool 1990s mobos, or else mobos with Universal AGP slots. I had a board with both JMB322 and ICH10R controllers a few years ago and remember wondering the same thing. Apparently it's preferable to use the South Bridge controller for hard drives and the JMicron for optical drives or eSATA connectors. Also, the JMicron "Smart Backup" RAID software seems …

I would also recommend the 1740. The only problem I've had with them is that it doesn't appear to be possible to have two in the same system for strange hardware reasons.

I assume it will become like buying from the U.S. - Europeans who buy computer hardware from the U.S. must pay (I think) 20-30% of the price in import duties. (I don't know if this includes the postal price.)

If Britain leaves the single market it will make buying/selling computer stuff across Europe more difficult. OTOH, Norway and Switzerland aren't in the EU but are still members of the market, so the two aren't necessarily connected.

It's a silly comparison. 11 years is a long time in computerland. Imagine comparing a Pentium 4 (2000) to a 486 (1989). What confuses people is that CPU speeds have hardly increased for decades. (My 2003 rig had a 'faster' CPU than my current one).

I've actually become a heavy user of FW only now that it's dying. Drobos are the reason. I have several of the older models and FW800 is the only way to get decent speed from them, since they don't support USB 3.0 or gigabit Ethernet.

Panther was riddled with bugs. IIRC, there was also a bug when using long passwords and a bug with the CUPS printer system.

I liked FireWire because it carried enough power over the cable to dispense with external power supplies for things like external hard drives. (Though I've heard nasty stories of people frying their computers by hot-plugging FW cables, so maybe it wasn't such a good idea.) Will I ever need that 12in …
