Which chipset does the Athlon have? On paper the KX133 was faster, but had lots of issues, where the AMD750 Irongate was the BX of the Athlon world - RAM at same clock as CPU, but solid, particularly with AMD southbridge (although AMD751+Via 686B was also quite common and worked, albeit with same …

The game runs fine now, I freed up 621k of free ram. But Alarics boot menu won't run for some reason. I'll no doubt be back with concerns about other old games that won't work! '

Sorry, I've been very busy the last few weeks. Thanks for your efforts Alaric, but I followed everything you wrote to the letter, and I'm still getting the exact same fault. Well, I managed to devise autoexec and config contents so I have over 600k free within W98. I'll have to live with that.

When you guys say 'boot straight to DOS' do you mean 'hit F8 on boot to go straight to DOS and avoid W98 launching' or do you mean 'reset to DOS from W98'? Or something else?

It's a reboot kind of thing. I set up a shortcut to Command.com and create custom Autoexec and Config via the advanced tab in Properties. When I double click on this shortcut it reboots the computer and boots a special DOS environment which I can exit by typing WIN which reboots the machine into 98 …

I recently went through something similar (although it was manifesting as hard drive errors), and figured out my PSU was dying. Sadly i fear you may face a long road of eliminating tons of possible causes before getting to the bottom of it, which was my experience.

Also for some reason DOS is reporting two versions of COMMAND.COM are loaded. Is that normal? How do I stop one of them loading?
