Maybe you can decrease the delay by setting a static IP on the Wi95 machine... Mapped network drives on a specific drive letter could also delay the startup.

You could test if e.g. "Commander Keen 4" will work correctly. This game usually suffers from screen stuttering while scrolling in the game on a G550.

If you'd like to stick with a ESS card, I'd recommend a Terratec 16/96 Gold (ESS AudioDrive ES1868F). It's low-noise and the PNP-config in DOS is one line in the autoexec.bat for initialization
