Instead of MSCDEX.EXE you could also try SHCDX33F.COM as a substitute: Copy code to clipboard 1 LH C:\DOS\SHCDX33F.COM /D:OPTICAL LASTDRIVE=F (instead of "Z" should also save a few bytes)

You could give "xfdisk" a try and see if it helps. I used it ages ago to hide NT partitions from Win98 while booting, IIRC... It even supports booting from logical partitions: https://www.mecronome.de/xfdisk/index.php

If Windows 10 should talk to Win98 (and vice versa) via SMB1, you will also need to Install the "DSclient" on the Windows 98 machine as this client enables the required "NTLM Version 2 Authentification".

With VmWare 10, I have the issue that drag'n'drop from Win10 to the Win98 desktop will lock up the VM... In the meantime, I've switched from VmWare to PCem which works flawlessly, however it consumes more CPU power

Encountering the same issue with Ryzen and Windows 98, I've tried everything from VMware 15 & 12.5.9, Virtualbox 5.2 & 6.1, with different setup options, e.g. ("APIC" on/off, "Intel VT-x, AMD-V/RVI" on/off, "nested pages" on/off, etc) Neither worked, until.... I simply tried VMware 10.0.7 build- …

Nice! Setting sound.opl3.enabled = "TRUE" sound.virtualDev = "sb16" in the .vmx file gives you a "SB16 / AWE 32 compatible" sound card on a new Windows 98 installation. Although the sound is quite "choppy" (not tested DOS mode yet)
