Is it possible to customise DOS boot menu in such a way that it shows description for each option on the list, similar to what PXE boot offers these days? Let's say I have 3 menu options - conventional memory, EMS and XMS. For each of these I'd like to add description at the bottom of the screen …

I never used a fancy case with a windows, LEDs, etc, as too much bling gets on my nerves, but to show off my retro builds I would make an exception.

I used to have an Intel Plato motherboard that looked very similar to this one, so my bet is on Intel as well. Try this: http://www.rcollins.org/ftp/manuals/motherbd/alfredo.pdf Board on page 32 looks almost exactly the same.

It works with CTCM version 1.06 that I have lifted from AWE64 driver CD. Not sure why CTCM version 1.08 downloaded from Creative's website would be causing problems, but it does. It could be the information within CTCM.INF file, but SET CTCM is still pointing to the folder where version 1.08 is. …

I would even suggest not to load it in config.sys at all, but just run it from autoexec.bat. It is not a TSR program. It just runs to initialize the card and exits. Still, the randomness of the freeze makes a hardware issue (card, board) a primary suspect. Did you try changing ISA slots? I tried …

As far as I can tell I am using newest drivers available, downloaded from Creative's website. AWEUTIL - 1.35 CTCM.EXE - 1.08 DIAGNOSE.EXE - 4.05 Changing TEMP variable to C:\TEMP made no difference.

It looked like corrosion to me. :) Take a look at the picture of the top cover. This black, soot like residue just above the screwdriver was right above the capacitor. It looks to me like the cap failed at some point in the past, vented and then started leaking through the bottom. I should still …
