Is that a proprietary riser card slot to the left or a usual 16bit ISA slot in a 90° angle? If you ask me: I would keep it as it is for a few weeks - maybe you find a nice idea what to do with it. It doesnt matter if you have a MFM or an IDE controller installed, both will work in the 286. As said, disable the controller BIOS and boot from Floppy. Then check with any IDE low-level tool if the drive is detected. If not, XT-IDE will not help you as there is another problem. Here are some tools …

Remove/Disable the Controller Bios, boot from floppy and look with any IDE Diagnostics utility if the drive is there...

Yes, a good question is if you mainbaord has onboard IDE? If yes, it needs to be disabled. IDE cable connected the right direction? 😉 Yes, the controller is cabable of running in a 286, otherwise the controller-BIOS would not initialize. Can you send photos of mainboard + controller?

I have never seen a Bios complaining about a missing Monitor..but may be. I am not sure in your case if the problem is related to the VGA but to the LCD? What kind of monitor is this? Is it analog or digital (EGA/CGA style)? Do you have the chance to connect another Graphics card to it?
