I'll try plugging into my amp later, didn't have time this morning. The sound via headphones could go plenty loud enough, it just sounded like listening to hold music on a telephone.

At a pinch you can put the hard disk in another machine, create your C partition to install into, format and make bootable, create a second partition on the same disk and copy the OS CD into it. Had to open up my 9x machine as I realised I'd forgotten to add a CD audio cable; Carmageddon 2 did not sound right without the Iron Maiden soundtrack. I remember now why enthusiasts abandoned the desktop PC case - having to move a CRT monitor to get inside the case gets old very quickly.

Watched a bunch of these a few years ago on archive.org, great fun to go back and see all kinds of things. Enjoyed the episodes with Gary Kildall (creator of CP/M) who seemed a genuinely nice guy.

EV700? I own one. They also sold those under the CrystalScan brand. Not sure who made the tube but there rock solid. Mine has an older firmware and lacks color adjustments though. I suggest you clone image your Windows partition. It should be fairly small about 300MB? For programs I'd install them to another partition so that it keeps your Windows partition small and compact. If you get infected it just takes a few seconds to restore the image back. Beats reinstalling …
