Re: A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

For everyone's amusement, the performance index according to Windows 7 Starter; willyWin7.png CPU is sweating bullets! Can't overclock further: the max voltage setting on the motherboard is 1.85 V, selecting this setting yields a voltage that oscillates between 1.77 V max and 1.73 V min. Recapping …

Re: A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

Another user on here is using a PCIe-to-PCI adapter with a conventional PCIe USB 3.0 card. You might be able to find this for cheaper than would cost an actual PCI USB 3.0 board (which by my understanding, would likely contain a very similar PCIe-to-PCI bridge chip as would be found on such a PCIe- …

Re: A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

Very nice ideas for your system, there aren't many people around here who use a vintage computer for everyday tasks, I'm one of them with my Pentium 3 system. About the graphics card, I can recommend you the Geforce 6800GT 256MB. Yes, it's not as fast as an ATI Radeon HD3850, but at least on my …

Re: Fixed aspect ratio scaling with Radeon

I guess I don't understand. If it has a control you should be able to set it to 4:3. I want the Radeon to automatically scale everything for me: its more convenient if you are switching back and forth between 16:9 and 4:3 resolutions. Example: my desktop resolution is 1080p, I fire up Tony Hawk's …

Errius wrote: That CNR slot is begging to be populated though. I put an Aztech modem in mine. To be perfectly honest, I was looking for CNR stuff because I never had anything 😅 The most interesting card I found is a network adapter like this one, but at that speed I think I'll pass.

Re: A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

(ORIGINAL FIRST POST) Hey there! I'm fairly new around here, I've only shared one previous build on the forum, Outrigger , based around the OR840 motherboard. That system was intended to be a Celeron 300A until it derailed beyond recognition after 10 minutes into motherboard shopping. I am starting …

A "modernized" P4 with RDRAM

(Scroll down for original first post.) Progress 0. Mainboard maintenance: recapped and cleaned Faster CPU: WIP --- 1. Modding and overclocking, pt.1: simple voltage mod performed, Windows boot at 2000 MHz (125 MHz FSB) --- 2. Modding and overclocking, pt.2: voltage divider mod performed, Windows …

Re: Fixed aspect ratio scaling with Radeon

Oh, I'm using a DVI-D to HDMI adapter, so I'm all digital. The only scaling option present is the one mentioned (at least with that version of the drivers) I remember running into this with a 1280x800 notebook with a Radeon 9600. As far as I recall, I couldn't get it working. I think the 9600 wasn't …

Fixed aspect ratio scaling with Radeon

I am using Windows 2000 and Catalyst version 5.8, and the only option regarding scaling is "scale to screen size". With a 1080p LCD turning on this option scales everything to 1080p for display, which stretches 4:3 resolutions. If I turn it off, the Radeon displays at the intended resolutions, …

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

Is this the model with 100MHz FSB or 133MHz FSB? The latter is marginally faster, but the 100MHz FSB model is definitely a great thing, perfect for using with a BX board on stock FSB settings (i.e. no overclocked AGP)! I have a pair of 1000B, so 133 MHz FSB. I got them by trading hardware directly, …

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

hmm... I wonder if that's the issue with my 840's... its farfetched, but not impossible: 1.5 GB and less—both ECC and no-ECC—work perfect with any AGP card I've tried, while 2GB gets weird. I'll try some more cards and report back, but if you are experiencing something similar and feel like testing …

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

A quick update after quite a while: I have replaced the caps, sort of. I desoldered the 18 non-tantalum caps and measured their ESR and capacitance values. 16 of the capacitors are Sanyo OS-CON caps which were basically in pristine condition, the other 2 "normal" caps have been replaced. OS-CONs …

Re: Nvidia NV1 & Sega Saturn?

Well, PowerVR is made by a British company. What I meant was SoJ still had firm grasp over all hardware related decisions, regardless of any suggestion from SoA. I don't know if it was a xenophobic decision for the Saturn, in any case. More cultural/circumstantial than anything else. But that's …

Re: Nvidia NV1 & Sega Saturn?

Didn't quite reverse it. For the dreamcast Sega of America was talking to 3dfx, but SoJ eventually settled for PowerVR for the graphics chip. I remember seeing packs of nv1 + Saturn controller + Virtua Fighter and Nights for sale when I was a kid. Always wanted one but was so disappointed by Sega's …

Re: ATI TruForm

Those are really cool, thanks for taking the time to post them. I really like what it can do, especially that chest in the first set of pics. A shame it was dropped after only one iteration and was left in software only for the 9xxx series. Yeah, its a really clever idea. I also think its a shame …

Re: ATI TruForm

A couple of pictures showcasing the difference in NWN. To enable TrueForm you must edit the nwn.ini file in the installation directory, find the line " Enable Truform=0 " and change the value to 1 . Also, TruForm must be enabled in the ATI drivers. The following are taken at 720p with AA off, notice …
