Re: ATI TruForm

I'm just confused by "R200's variations", I guess (s)he means R200 as the family and refers to R2x0 and others? I misunderstood 8500le/9100 as R200 (8500) variations.

Re: ATI TruForm

Hey that's not entirely true. Radeon 8500 is quite capable of running 16bit color depth games well at even 1920x1200 sometimes. I've been playing Undying on a slew of different cards and comparing their 16bit dithering. Flipping to 32bit color is a killer but many old games actually look as good or …

Re: ATI TruForm

Which games actually look better with it? NWN looks nice, it makes the characters look better. There are some environmental errors—barrels come to mind—that result from the "rounding". With an R200 card you can't really play at high resolutions/enable AA/etc, so "looking better" is kind of …

Re: quake3 SMP-scaling thread…

Niiiiiice! The scaling is pretty similar between your 5900 and my 6800, you get extra ~30% and ~25% FPS respectively, when enablling SMP at 720p and 1080p. Pretty sweet! Couple of questions: -are your results from a single run, or an average of various runs? -did you touch the FOV setting?

Re: ATI TruForm

As said in previous posts: Latest card to do it is the Radeon 9100 (which is a rehash of the 8500LE). Most powerful card to do it is the Radeon 8500. These 3 cards do it on hardware, other cards sort of emulate it, but usually leads to messed up graphics. My contribution: The last drivers to support …

Re: quake3 SMP-scaling thread…

Awesome! At 1.4 GHz you gained around 29% performance with SMP, and overclocked you got an extra 33%. Overclocking sure helped quite a bit, I see (~17% extra FPS if you compare the SMP results). Would you be willing to try 720p and 1080p? Your config is very similar to mine, I would like to see how …

Re: quake3 SMP-scaling thread…

Tried to run some benchmarks today using my dual Tualatin board, however I could not get Quake 3 to behave properly. Specifically, whenever I turned SMP on, the game would freeze :(. This was on Windows XP SP3 and the latest patch for the game and a GeForce 5900 Ultra. Anybody encountered this …

vlask wrote: Question - is smp enabled by default in Q3 demo or disabled? Im curious, because i have already tested a lot of cards and want to know if it that test supported my dual Athlon MP, or it ran only on one cpu. SMP is disabled by default.

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

i really like mouser.com reasonable prices, quick shipping. Thanks for the heads up, mouser was indeed the best price I could find that does not involve ebay, alibaba, or other pages like that. Oh boy. Caps range from €1.2 to €1.75 a piece, need 18 for motherboard, 8 per slotket, a spare of each …

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

Replacing the caps will have to wait a bit: 16 out of the 18 capacitors on the board are (ultra) low ESR Sanyo caps which are not carried by my local electronics shop. The low ESR caps at my local shop are Panasonic/Nichicon, and they have like an order of magnitude more resistance. I will have to …

Re: Quake III Arena Benchmark Thread

*cough*/r_primitives 2*cough* A lot of the judgment against ATI had to do with the compiled vertex array extension not being properly detected by the game on their cards making it pick a slow path (r_primitives 1 uses this fallback mode). Ahh, cool! I'll play with this over the weekend. You are …

Re: Quake III Arena Benchmark Thread

I'm blaming the SiS chipset for now, I know the 645DX is quite a bit slower than the more expensive i850/E. I've seen some benchmarks where the i850E it is 20% faster with PC1066 RDRAM. Unfortunately, my TH7II bios is corrupt, so I have no way of using my only i850. Need to find someone with a bios …

Re: Quake III Arena Benchmark Thread

Ok... is the Radeon 9700 Pro supposed to be slower than a GeForce 4 Ti4600? I always remember the Radeon 9700 Pro as being WAAAY better than the GeForce 4's. Here's my result (same system as my posted Ti4600 results). 242.3 fps, dexvx, Hercules Radeon 9700 Pro 325/620 (stock, Cat 10.2), P4 3.06/133 …

luckybob wrote: with all these instabilities, im wondering if the board needs new caps. they dont need to be bulging, but might have dried out. True. In fact I should've replaced them as soon as I got the board, but I slacked off. I'll make this my next priority.

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

I like it! I prefer modern cases too, the superior cooling and cable management capabilities are a big plus in my books. And if the case is good looking (that's highly subjective of course), then why not? I do like the Fractal Design cases which look similar. I have used the Define R5 for three of …

Re: "Outrigger" OR840 build

I've been testing the machine for over a month now, and the CPUs seem to be stable. In the meantime I've also done a couple of things: I finally changed the case, and I looked into some RAM issues I've had in the past. RDRAM Trouble Previously in this thread I had stated that 40 ns RIMMs made the …
