ESS cards also had software solution to pass ISA DMA via PCI, like some other manufacturers at that time. SB-Link standard was designed to work directly without a driver, just like a real ISA sound card, i.e. no memory managers shenanigans and waste of conventional memory.

The Matrox G550 PCI-E card also works with Windows 98 using the Matrox drivers Huh, it actually works in Win9x environment? If so, that's Riva TNT2 level card (with similar feature set), which may come in handy.

AFAIK 6800 XT from XFX is just custom GeForce 6800LE card with GDDR3 memory. It's still NV40 chip with native AGP bus, so it should work with early drivers, which predates Nvidia cards with PCIe-AGP bridge.

VT8237 south bridge has hardware bug, it won't identify SATAII or SATAIII HDDs, unless they have SATAI fallback jumper. Promise SATA controller has only RAID modes available (no PATA emulation or AHCI) which requires driver installation for NT based OS.

VIA ports are not compatible with SATAII/III standard. if use the red ports, i can find HDD/SDD from boot menu, but cannot find it from BIOS, Of course you can't, they are attached to Promise controller which has separate OptionROM.

Win2k will boot slower in general. It's more interesting, if you want to freely experiment with 8-bit and 15-bit color modes and other legacy stuff. Also easier to migrate OS between different systems and much less bloated with useless software for modern use. The price to pay for that is driver and …
