Re: Dune II - extended memory is not available

There does not seem to be an original intro audio in German, your best bet is to use subtitles for this. There was also a clone of this game made, called 'Dune Legacy', which used the original sound files, but there was no German intro listed among those files either. I did find a home-made German …

Re: Trouble getting US Navy Fighters to run on vintage hardware

Using irq 2/9 is usually used by MIDI audio devices on ISA. Not sure about MCA setup, but irq 3/5/7 are more common for digital sound like old ISA Soundblaster cards. Maybe the game only can support the old irq 3, 5 or 7 for digital sound? There is a separate config page for music where the Midi io …

Re: Tie Fighter joystick problem...

in PC Emulation
Isn't this one of the old games that you need to calibrate the stick in *every time* you start it up? (I haven't run it for awhile, so I forgot) In DOSBox, you could set the joystick polling to 'timed=false', not sure what your pc emulation requires.

Re: TOCA 2 Touring Cars and VSync

Can you not lock the VSYNC on in the Catalyst control panel? Don't you get visible tearing with it off? I'd think the 999fps could be just a maximum displayable value, and the program cannot compensate for what the actual fps is. The Voodoo2 does not have higher resolution on it's own, but with 2 in …

Re: Trouble getting US Navy Fighters to run on vintage hardware

in DOS
Do you need the UniVBE v5.0 from the game? I thought that was mainly for getting odd/incompatible cards to work with some games. (I don't think I've loaded it in my DOSBox setup, as the builtin drivers are VBE compliant, with various old versions, but I don't recall how I originally used it back in …

Re: Trouble getting US Navy Fighters to run on vintage hardware

in DOS
Ok, I have added a zipped archive of my files from the floppy. One is the USNF11.exe patch itself, then a help file and a config file; not sure they were all related, but at least it's all there: USNF11.zip Note that the patch only works of a full installation, as a smaller installation leaves some …

The crash dump just shows some dummy values 'h' for all registers, not sure what that is supposed to mean? I'd expect some actual hex values? Your graphics chip S3 928 and 805 are supported by the game, so that should be fine, though the 805 B step has some possible issues, according to the readme. …

Re: Win XP 32 or 64 bit?

I still run XP64 on one computer, but I concur that for games it could be some issues; most common problem was the installers that were 16-bit, and had to be updated, while the games often worked once installed. Some old games had the same issue with copy-protection also being incompatible and never …

Re: FYI: Steam drops Win7/8/8.1 in 2024

in Milliways
I tried Playnite for a bit, but the last update did not want to install, so I had to uninstall it - maybe try again a bit later. It does not help with the various 'game launcher needs later operating system' issues from UBI/Steam/EA launchers of course.
