Damn, that's annoying! I'd not got to installing Win10 yet, but I might give it a go now, see if it solves the problem. It will be interesting to see what Vista and Win8 do too.

The problem I had was the setup had added emm386 to my config sys but it had pointed it at the windows directory not the dos directory. This caused the PC to freeze on boot. Changing it to C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE worked for me and I now have working audio.

As far as I could find out it's just not possible. The only low profile soundcard I could find was the Audigy SE which doesn't have Win98 drivers anyway. On a related note, the best low profile AGP GFX card I found was a Radeon 9600SE but these aren't anywhere near as good as the 9800 Pro.

Tried a few different drivers, got DXdiag working and some games, but for example, CMR2 still crashes on Win98 whereas the same system booting into XP runs it just fine.

I've tried RLoew's patch and it does allow me to remove the MaxPhysPAge - which does work. However the 2 D3D games I've tried both crash. Using DX9c. I've also been reading that thread you've linked to and made a post on that forum. I'll try himemx next.

That would make sense, but (and I don't know how this works), if it works fine without drivers, is it not a driver - i.e. software that's mapping the RAM and therefore it should only know about the same 512MB as Windows?

Just wondering if any of the VGA emulation options on DOSbox support drivers with widescreen resolutions in Win3.1. I've tried S3 and et4000, no joy. For example, I have Win3.1 running natively on an 815 chipset, the Win3.1 drivers for this support a few widescreen resolutions.
