For a quick test I guess it would be ok to use a BIOS from another board with the same chipset. Let's say, Octek Jaguar V, which you can find here Or the more obscure TAM/33/40-MA0 from here Keyboard controllers are usually interchangeable, so you might borrow one from another motherboard.

I think the two hard drives aren't a big enough load for the +5V rail, you can add a dummy load (power resistors, or car headlight bulb) or even a motherboard, as the voltages aren't that much out of spec, and check again.

Really can't help with that, the datasheet only specifies < 5% Non-ionic surfactants . Seen that on a lot of detergents, but they usually don't strip paint from stuff :) I used the product a few times without gloves and it wasn't pleasant - it's very alkaline, dunno if this is due to the surfactants …

Not impossible, but not that simple either. The Dallas 1287 doesn't accept external supply, you'll have to exchange it with some chip that does, and then populate all the missing parts. Biostar MB-8500TVX-A with CR2032 & DS287

The chip under the label is a SMS OMTI 20513. Couldn't find much about it: OMTI 3127A-3AA, Also SMS brand. SCSI to RLL adapter. Has 50-pin SCSI header, and 34 pin with two 20-pin hard drive RLL header set. Has OMTI 20513 chip. No docs, not tested. Google says up to two ST506/412 RLL 2,7 drives …

Just an idea. Asus boards are notorious for having the silkscreen on the caps the wrong way around (solid white or hatch pattern at the positive terminal instead of the negative). If you and your friend didn't pay attention to this, the caps might be installed backwards.

Layout is very similar to my GA-7VX, and I've successfully added an ISA slot, all that was needed was the slot itself.
